It is with deepest regret and sorrow that Virginia Professional Fire Fighters reports the passing of former VPFF President John Alvin Whitehead of IAFF Local 539—Portsmouth, VA.  Brother Whitehead, 81, died Friday, April 28, 2006 after a long illness.  The funeral will be held on Monday, May 1, 2006 at 11:30 AM at Loving Funeral Home, 3225 Academy Ave. (Churchland Chapel), Portsmouth, VA 23703, (757) 484-3373.  Burial will follow afterwards in Portsmouth’s Olive Branch Cemetery.

Brother Whitehead retired as a Captain for the Portsmouth Fire Department after 40 years of service.  He has the distinction of serving his entire career without ever using a single day of sick leave, a record that still stands.  Among his many survivors are eight family members who belong to IAFF locals in Portsmouth (L-539), Suffolk (L-2801), and Virginia Beach (L-2924).
