Former Secretary of State Colin Powell Endorses Senator Obama for
President October 19, 2008 - Former Secretary of State Colin Powell endorsed Senator Barack Obama for president today, saying that Obama would prove to be an "exceptional" leader who had the ability to repair America's reputation and relationships overseas. Powell noted that Obama has "displayed a steadiness, an intellectual curiosity, a depth of knowledge and an approach to looking at problems like [the economic crisis] that would serve us well." While Powell expressed his respect and admiration for Senator McCain, he indicated that he was troubled by some of McCain's choices over the past few weeks, including his handling of the economic crisis and his choice of Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate, stating the he doesn't believe she is ready to be president. Powell also said he was bothered by the personal attacks launched against Senator Obama in recent weeks, stating that he was "disappointed" that the campaign would focus on issues "that are not really central to the problems that the American people are worried about." Powell is a retired Army General who served as U.S. Secretary of State under President George W. Bush. Powell also served as National Security Advisor from 1987 - 1989 and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 - 1993.
